The People Have Spoken

Truly heinous weather did little to dampen the spirits at the inaugural Bridge Day Chili cook-off.  After engaging in a week of monumental trash talk, the Water Stone team of Ethan and Kenny, sporting burly fu manchus and western style shirts, stepped up to the plate and hit a home run, winning the coveted People’s Choice Award and coming in second in the non-traditional category.  Not bad for a couple of retail guys.

Fayetteville closed its streets and welcomed hundreds of chilly Bridge Day folks for the festivities which included a beer garden (Can you believe it!?  Drinking in public in Fayetteville…sign ‘o the times.), and an appearance by the Davisson Brothers, a dynamic and entertaining band from Clarksburg, WV.  For much of the day the Water Stone boys ran neck-and-neck with Oscar from Diogi’s.  People voted by giving their mardi gras necklaces to the chefs of their favorite chili.  Ethan sported a huge wads of beads around his neck. Water Stone edged out Diogi’s in the People’s Choice contest by mere 16 necklaces.  Oscar won the overall prize for best chili in the Traditional category

Asked about their chili Kenny replied “it was pig with a personality”.  It featured four kinds of pork and multiple chili pepper varieties, slow-cooked for two days.  “It emphasized flavor over heat, though it did have a slow burn.” Asked about his plans for next year he replied “This year we used simple, conventional warfare;  next year we are pulling out the real artillery.”  Caveat emptor.
