Gauley River on a Surfboard! First Time!

By: 0 Comments

Chuck Hamilton strapped his surfboard to the back of a raft, paddled down to Diagonal Ledges, the primo surf spot on the Lower Gauley, and laid claim to the first documented surf (on a board, not a kayak) ever.  We are throwing that out there and granted, Chuck is my brother, but you find us someone else who can back up their claim.  Until then, we are going with it!   Watch Chuck, a Charleston resident, avid surfer, cyclist and all round hardman, figure it out.  I know, he isn’t wearing a helmet and I told him he was a dumbass but surfers are way too cool for helmets.  He says next Gauley season he is going to dial it in with a shorter, thicker board.  Cowabunga! Stay tuned…
